Starting in the Netherlands, the Egmont Overture, composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1809, serves as a powerful musical introduction to Goethe's play "Egmont." This piece is renowned for its dramatic contrasts and emotional depth, encapsulating the themes of struggle and triumph central to Count Egmont's stand against tyranny.
Next we travel to Czechia with Jan Křtitel Vaňhal's showcase of the versatility and charm of the bassoon, an instrument often overshadowed by its more prominent orchestral counterparts. Composed in the late 18th century, this concerto features a delightful interplay between the two solo bassoons, creating a rich and textured sound that is both playful and intricate.
